Translational Research Using Microsamples

Every lung cancer is unique. Using small tissue samples collected during minimally invasive procedures, our research uncovers the biological information needed to improve diagnosis, guide treatment decisions, and develop personalized therapies.

Biomarker Discovery

Not every patient responds to the same treatment. Using tissue obtained through endobronchial ultrasound-guided biopsy (EBUS-TBNA), we investigate biomarkers, including cathepsins and other molecular signatures, to better understand tumor biology and identify patients who may benefit from targeted therapies.

Why it matters: Personalized treatment begins with understanding each patient's unique cancer.

EBUS-Chek

Waiting for diagnostic results can delay critical treatment decisions. Our team developed EBUS-Chek, a rapid handheld diagnostic device capable of evaluating biopsy samples in approximately five minutes with high sensitivity and specificity.

By providing immediate feedback during the biopsy procedure, EBUS-Chek has the potential to reduce repeat procedures, improve healthcare efficiency, and help patients begin treatment sooner.

Why it matters: Faster diagnosis means faster treatment and fewer delays in care.

Patient-Derived Organoids

Organoids are miniature three-dimensional models grown from patient tumors that closely mimic the structure, genetics, and behaviour of the original cancer.

Our laboratory uses these personalized models to better understand how lung cancers develop, evaluate promising new therapies, and explore individualized treatment strategies before they reach patients. Additionally, we are investigating the role of stem cell organoids as a therapy for pulmonary fibrosis and COPD.

 

Why it matters: Organoids bring us closer to truly personalized cancer treatment.
